Salivary Gland Care

Good oral and digestive health starts in your mouth

Until you have a problem, you probably never consider the health of your salivary glands. We often think of saliva as just spit, but did you know your saliva plays an important role in your digestion and oral hygiene, and having healthy salivary glands is important to your overall health?

At West Jefferson Medical Center, we understand how salivary gland health impacts your digestive and oral health, as well as your overall well-being. If you have a problem with your salivary glands, we’re here to help.

The role of the salivary gland

Your salivary glands are located in your mouth and throat. They produce saliva, a fluid that begins the digestion process in your mouth. Saliva helps break down food, making it easier to swallow.

Saliva also plays a role in oral health, containing enzymes that help prevent tooth decay and gum diseases.

Common salivary gland problems

Salivary gland problems are more than just dry mouth. Some common salivary gland problems include:

  • Dry mouth (xerostomia) — Reduced saliva production often is caused by medications or certain medical conditions, creating oral discomfort, difficulty swallowing, and an increased risk of dental issues.
  • Salivary gland infections (sialadenitis) — Inflamed salivary glands due to bacterial infections can cause pain, swelling, and fever.
  • Salivary gland tumors — These growths in the salivary glands may require medical intervention.
  • Salivary stones (sialolithiasis) — These hardened deposits of minerals and salts in the salivary ducts can block the flow of saliva and cause swelling, pain, and difficulty swallowing.
