Percutaneous nephorolithotomy
Percutaneous nephorolithotomy
This advanced surgery is used to treat large and complex kidney stones.
Large and complex kidney stones can be difficult to treat
While smaller kidney stones can be treated using ultrasound shock waves or ureteroscopy, larger stones may require surgery to remove.
Procedure
Percutaneous nephorolithotomy is a type of surgery used to remove large and complex kidney stones. In this procedure, the surgeon makes a tiny incision in the back in order to reach the kidney and locate the stone. The stone is removed using a nephroscope, a thin surgical tool equipped with a light and magnifying lens.
If stones are very large in size, your surgeon may use an energy probe to break the stone into smaller pieces before removal.
