Preparing for Treatments & Surgery at West Jefferson Medical Center

Below you will find guides detailing what you can do to prepare for various operations at West Jefferson Medical Center. If you have any questions contact us online or call 504.380.0723.

General information

Parking is available at ground level in front of the facility and in a FREE parking garage located by the Physician’s Office Buildings on Avenue B.

Visiting Hours end at 10pm. These hours are enforced to maintain a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors. If you have been given permission to stay with a patient overnight, please have all personal belongings with you by 10pm. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Outpatient diagnostic registration locations

Patient Access Services has Registration Staff in the following locations to assist you with your visit:

  • The Outpatient Laboratory is located in Suite N119
  • Imaging Center/MRI located in Suite N105
  • Women’s Imaging and Breast Care Center for all Mammograms (located in the WJMC Medical Plaza)
  • Outpatient Rehab Connection in the WJMC Medical Plaza
  • ALL other outpatient diagnostic, surgical and Direct Admissions go through Central Registration located near the Gift Shop in the Hospital Atrium

Important message from Medicare

Medicare eligible beneficiaries will sign and be given a copy of the “Important Message From Medicare” upon all inpatient admissions to the facility outlining your appeal rights and the process you would need to follow should you feel that you are not ready for discharge from the hospital when your Physician informs you that you are being discharged.

You will also receive a second copy of this document within 48 hours of the intent of discharge by your Physician.

2-D echocardiogram

Department: Cardiology on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital (use elevators near the Emergency Room)

Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Do not ingest any caffeine (example: tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks, etc.) 24 hours before your test.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your test.
  • Bring a list of current medications.
  • Dress very comfortably for this test (sweat suit and tennis shoes).
  • Please feel free to bring a light sweater or jacket, some reading material or a listening headset with your favorite music, book on tape or CD, being that your test may be lengthy.
The Family Doctors

To cut down on waiting time, be prepared! Before you come in for your next or first appointment with a Family Doctor, New Orleans patients should make sure to have all of the following items when visiting our medical office:

  • Updated insurance card
  • Driver’s license or other photo identification card
  • Co-pay or payment
  • Medications you are currently taking
  • New Patients should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time
  • Existing Patients should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time

Schedule an appointment today with a Family Doctor. New Orleans area patients, including those from the West Bank, Marrero ,Harvey, Luling, and Port Sulphur, will find our 6 locations convenient.

Barium enema with air contrast

Department: X-Ray on 1st floor across the hall from Central Registration

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

This procedure required a (3) day preparation. In order to better serve you and assure a quality study, the following three-day routine for preparation is urged:

Day 1:

  • Breakfast = clear apple or grape juice, 1 large glass of water
  • 10am = 1 large glass of water
  • Lunch = clear bouillon soup, plain jello, large class of water
  • 3pm = large glass of water
  • Dinner = same as lunch (day 1)
  • 7pm = large glass of water
  • 9pm = bouillon soup or clear fruit juice – drink as desired

Day 2:

  • Breakfast = clear apple or grape juice, 1 large glass of water
  • 10am = 1 large glass of water
  • Lunch = clear bouillon soup, plain jello, large class of water
  • 3pm = large glass of water
  • Dinner = same as lunch (day 1)
  • 7pm = large glass of water
  • 8pm = bottle of Citrate of Magnesia
  • 10pm = 3 Ducolax tablets-swallow whole with large glass of water (DO NOT TAKE WITHIN 1 HOUR OF ANTACID)

Day 3:

  • Breakfast = clear liquids only, no milk or cream
  • 7am = Ducolax suppository – unwrap the suppository and insert into the rectum as high as possible. Close thighs for 15-20 minutes. (Arrange beforehand if assistance is needed).

Cleaning of the bowel is of great importance to achieve a quality exam. It is in your best interest to follow instructions completely. Timing is important. Come to the X-ray department for the appointed time.

Colyte may be alternated for the Citrate Magnesium and Ducolax tablets.

Bronchoscopy/EGD/EUS/ERCP/bone marrow biopsy

Department: Endoscopy (on 1st floor located near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least 30 - 45 mins prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Patient should meet with or speak with a Pre-Admin nurse prior to the day of the procedure to gather patient medical history information and current medications
  • Bring a list of current medications that includes vitamins and any herbals.
  • Nothing to eat or drink past midnight the day before the appointment, unless instructed otherwise by your Physician.
  • Please leave all valuables at home.
  • A designated driver must be available, on site or by phone, to take the patient home.
  • (Endoscopy/transport staff will place the patient in the vehicle).
  • Taxi and/or bus transport should be cleared by a Physician prior to the examination.
  • If you are on aspirin or any blood thinning medications, please verify with your Physician the amount of time that you are allowed to hold these medications.
Cardiac doppler with color flow

Department: Cardiology on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital (use the elevators near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Do not ingest any caffeine (example: tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks, etc.) 24 hours before your test.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your test.
  • Bring a list of current medications.
  • Dress very comfortably for this test (sweat suit and tennis shoes).
  • Please feel free to bring a light sweater or jacket, some reading material or a listening headset with your favorite music, book on tape or CD, being that your test may be lengthy.
Cardiac stress SPECT scan

Department: Nuclear Medicine on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital (use the elevators near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

A special type of medication will be ordered specifically for this exam. It will be ordered the day before your test. Please make every effort to keep this appointment. If you cannot keep this appointment, please call within 24 hours to either 504.349.6300 or 504.349.1472.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your test.
  • No milk or milk products are to be consumed while this study is in process.
  • Do not take any Beta-blocker medication 24 hours before the test.
  • Dress very comfortably for this test (jogging pants and tennis shoes).
  • Please feel free to bring a light sweater or jacket, some reading material or a listening headset with your favorite music, book on tape or CD, being that your test may be lengthy.
Cardioversion

Department: Cardiology on 2nd floor (use the elevators near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

Patient must not eat or drink after midnight prior to the scheduled appointment.

Colonoscopy

Department: Endoscopy (on 1st floor of Main Hospital near the Emergency Room)

  • Patient should meet with or speak with a Pre-Admin nurse prior to the day of the procedure to gather patient medical history information and current medications.
  • Patient should report to Central Registration at least 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.
  • Bring a list of current medications that includes vitamins and any herbals.
  • Patient should only have clear liquids the entire day before the procedure. Nothing to eat or drink past midnight the day before the appointment, unless instructed otherwise by your physician.
  • Please leave all valuables at home.
  • A designated driver must be available, on site or by phone, to take the patient home.
  • (Endoscopy/transport staff will place the patient in the vehicle).
  • Taxi and/or bus transport should be cleared by a physician prior to the examination.
  • If you are on aspirin or any blood thinning medications, please verify with your physician the amount of time that you are allowed to hold these medications.
CT of abdomen & pelvis without contrast

Department: Cat Scan (on 1st floor of Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • You must pick up your oral contrast in the CT department on the first floor in Radiology, Monday-Friday only, between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • Contrast must be picked up the day before the exam.
  • You will be given instructions on how to drink the contrast. This may cause mild cramping and some diarrhea, but the drink is necessary to get the diagnostic results required when the CT scan is performed.
  • Please do not eat or drink anything 2 hours before the procedure except for the contrast.
  • After arriving in the CT department, the CT nurse will start an IV.
  • You can be scanned with your clothes on. However, you can save yourself time by dressing appropriately. Wear comfortable clothing such as a sweat suit. Please do not wear clothing with metal; ex: zippers or suspenders with metal.
  • If applicable, remove all body piercings.
  • Female patients are asked not to wear a bra or only wear a sports bra or a bra that does not have metal in it. If you have to wear a bra with metal in it, it can be removed in the CT dressing room.
  • Please bring a list of all medications that you are currently taking.
CT of abdomen & pelvis with & without contrast

Department: Cat Scan on 1st floor of Main Hospital

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • You must pick up your oral contrast in the CT department on the first floor in Radiology, Monday-Friday only, between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • Contrast must be picked up the day before the exam.

CT of chest with & without contrast

Department: Cat Scan on 1st floor of Main Hospital

  • After arriving in the CT department, the CT nurse will start an IV.
CT of chest without contrast

Department: Cat Scan on 1st floor of Main Hospital

EEG

Department: EEG located on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital (use elevators near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • The patient must eat within two hours prior to the test being performed.
  • Hair must be washed the night before the test.
  • Please do not oil, spray or tease hair and scalp must be clean.
  • Adults cannot sleep for 24 hours prior to the test being performed.
  • Children may sleep from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and kept awake for the remainder of the night.
  • Patients must not have any stimulants prior to the test, ex: coffee and chocolate.
  • Please do not take any newly prescribed medications until after the test has been performed.
EGD, simple primary exam

Department: Endoscopy – 1st Floor near the Emergency Room

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Bring a list of current medications that includes vitamins and any herbals.
  • Nothing to eat or drink past midnight the day before the appointment, unless instructed otherwise by your Physician.
  • Please leave all valuables at home.
  • A designated driver must be available, on site or by phone, to take the patient home.
  • (Endoscopy will place the patient in the vehicle).
  • Taxi and/or bus transport should be cleared by a Physician prior to the examination.
  • If you are on aspirin, anticoagulants or blood thinners, please verify with your Physician the amount of time that you are allowed to hold these medications.
EP brainstem auditory

Department: EEG on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital (use elevators near the Emergency Room)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • If the patient is a baby, please keep awake and do not let the baby fall asleep until late night, but awaken the baby early the next morning.
  • Please do not feed the baby until you have arrived to the EEG department the morning of your scheduled test.
Esophageal motility

Department: Endoscopy (on 1st floor across from the Emergency Room)

  • Patient should meet with or speak with a Pre-Admit nurse prior to the day of the procedure to gather patient medical history information and current medications.
  • Bring a list of all current medications and doses including vitamins/supplements.
  • Patient should report to central registration 30-45 min prior to the scheduled appointment time to register and check in.
  • Nothing to eat or drink past midnight the day of the procedure, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
  • Please leave all valuables at home.
  • Patient is not given any sedation for this procedure so they are allowed to drive themselves home.
  • If you are on aspirin or any blood thinning medications, please verify with your physician the amount of time that you are allowed to hold these medications.
Hysterosalpingography

Department: X-Ray (on the 1st floor of the Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

This procedure is only performed 8-10 days from the first day of menstrual cycle.

The patient shall have:

  • No active vaginal bleeding
  • No active pelvic infection

The exam will NOT be performed within 6 (six) weeks of:

  • Pregnancy
  • Uterine Surgery
  • Tubal Surgery
  • D&C

The exam will NOT be performed if possibility of:

  • Pregnancy
  • Iodine Allergy

The exam will NOT be performed after the 10th day since the start of the last menses, if the patient has a regular menstrual cycle.

**PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE IN ANY SEXUAL ACTIVITY FROM START OF LAST MENSES**

IVP routine

Department: X-Ray on the 1st floor of the Main Hospital

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

Day before examination: (Eat only the following):

Noon =

  • 1 cup bouillon soup
  • 1 glass of clear apple or grape juice
  • 1 serving of plain jello (no cream, fruit or other additive)
  • 1 glass of skimmed milk

1pm = 1 large glass of water
3pm = 1 large glass of water
5pm = Dinner:

  • 1 cup bouillon soup
  • 1 serving of plain jello (no cream, fruit or other additive)

7pm = 1 large glass of water
8pm = 1 bottle of Citrate Magnesia
10pm =

  • Take 3 Ducolax tablets with one large glass of water.
  • Swallow tablets whole and DO NOT take within one hour of antacids or milk.

11pm = 1 large glass of water

Day of examination:

5am = Use one Ducolax suppository as follows:

  • Unwrap suppository and insert into rectum as high as possible.
  • Close thighs to retain for 15-20 minutes.
  • If you need assistance, make sure that a bedpan, diaper, commode or help to the bathroom is available.

Cleansing of the bowel is your responsibility so please take it seriously. The better you do it the greater the likelihood of accurate interpretation of the examination by the Radiologist. Therefore, it is in your own best interest to follow these instructions carefully and completely. Timing is important.

Please bring a list of all medications that you are currently taking.

Mammogram screening bilateral

Department: Women’s Imaging Center located in the WJMC Medical Plaza (Rite Aid shopping center)

  • Please do not wear underarm deodorant or powder of any kind on the day of the exam.
  • If you have had a previous mammogram or ultrasound at another facility, please bring the films and reports with you.
MRI procedures

Department: WEST JEFFERSON PHYSICIANS OFFICE BUILDING (POB) FIRST FLOOR, SUITE N-108 - 504.349.6110

The prep instructions below apply to the following tests:

  • MRI ABDOMEN
  • MRI ABD/ADRENAL
  • MRI ABD/KIDNEY
  • MRI ABD/LIVER
  • MRI ABD/PANCREAS
  • MRI ABD/SPLEEN
  • MRCP (CHOLANGRIOGRAM)
  • MRI LIVER
  • MRI PELVIS
  • MRI PROSTATE
  • MRI RECTUM
  • MRI UTERUS

Please bring any and all films, scans and reports (from an outside Facility) related to this test with you to this appointment.

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your test. You may have LIMITED LIQUIDS 6 hours before your test.

The following instructions below are for patients that require Sedation prior to having an MRI procedure.

Sedation Instructions:

  • The physician's office must contact Surgery/Anesthesia at ext. 2304 to schedule the sedation portion of the test.
  • The patient must report to Central Registration at least 2 hours before their MRI procedure.
  • The patient must have outpatient admit orders for the MRI when they report to Registration, and they must have a consultation with Anesthesia for sedation.
  • The patient is not to eat or drink anything after midnight.

The prep instructions below apply to the following tests:

  • MRI PROSTATE W/O CONTRAST (ENDORECAL COIL)
  • MRI RECTUM W/O CONTRAST (ENDOCREAL COIL)

Department: WEST JEFFERSON PHYSICIANS OFFICE BUILDING (POB) FIRST FLOOR, SUITE N-108 - 349-6110

Clear liquids only for 2 days. No milk or cream.

Day 1:

  • Breakfast: Clear apple or grape juice, 1 large glass of water
  • 10am: Large glass of water
  • LUNCH: Clear bouillon soup, plain jello, large glass of water
  • 3pm: Large glass of water
  • SUPPER: Same as lunch (Day 2)
  • 7pm: Large glass of water
  • 8pm: Bottle of Citrate Magnesia
  • 10pm: 3 Ducolax Tablets - Swallow whole with large glass of water (DO NOT TAKE WITHIN 1 HOUR OF ANTACID)

Day 2:

  • 6:45am Breakfast: Clear liquids only - No milk or cream
  • Do not eat or drink anything after breakfast - clear liquids only.
  • 7am: Ducolax Suppository -
    • Arrange assistance before hand if needed.
    • Unwrap the suppository and insert into the rectum as high as possible.
    • Close thighs for 15 - 20 minutes.

Colyte may be alternated for the Citrate Magnesium and Ducolax tablets.

Please bring any and all films, scans and reports (from an outside Facility) related to this test with you to this appointment. Also please provide test results on biopsy, lab and PSA reports.

The following instructions below are for patients that require Sedation prior to having an MRI procedure.

Sedation Instructions:

  • The physician's office must contact Surgery/Anesthesia at ext. 2304 to schedule the sedation portion of the test.
  • The patient must report to Central Registration at least 2 hours before their MRI procedure.
  • The patient must have outpatient admit orders for the MRI when they report to Registration, and they must have a consultation with Anesthesia for sedation.
  • The patient is not to eat or drink anything after midnight.
PET/CT scan

Department: CT (located on the 1st floor of the Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Physician’s office must fax the most recent mini-metal status if Brain Pet/CT is scheduled.
  • Patient must go on a high protein/low carbohydrate diet 48 hours prior to the exam. The doctor's office nurse will give indications on foods to consume during the consult visit.
  • If the patient has had any previous PET-CT scans, please fax the reports to 349-1470.
  • Diabetic patients will be scheduled in the afternoon.
Pulmonary function test

Department: Respiratory (located on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

Procedure preps:

  • No breathing treatments of any kind, inhalers or oral breathing meds the day of the test.
  • No smoking 6 hours before the test.
  • No caffeine 6 hours before the test.
  • Please call 504.349.2340 if you have any questions.
Stress test

Department: Cardiology (located on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Do not ingest any caffeine (example: tea, coffee, soft drinks, chocolate) 24 hours before your test.
  • Do not take any beta-blocker medication 24 hours before the test.
  • Patient may take required medication with a small amount (sip) of water.
  • Bring a list of current medications that you are taking.
  • Dress very comfortably for this test (sweat suit and tennis shoes)
  • Please feel free to bring a light sweater or jacket, some reading material or a listening headset with your favorite music, book on tape or CD, because your test may be lengthy.
Surgical pre-registration

If you are scheduled for a surgical procedure at West Jefferson Medical Center, please call 504.349.2437 to schedule your Pre-Op Appointment for a minimum of 3 days prior to your scheduled procedure date.

During this appointment, you will complete the following, so please be sure to allot at least 90 minutes to complete the entire process:

  • Meet with the Pre-Op Registration staff to gather your current demographic and insurance information, as well as sign all necessary hospital forms.
  • Anesthesia consultation (if required)
  • Pre-Op Nurse consultation
  • Lab work ordered by your Physician or Anesthesia (if required)
  • EKG (if required)
  • Chest x-ray if ordered

Your insurance eligibility and benefit information will be verified by a Pre-Registration staff member and they will contact you to make you aware of any financial liability due prior to your procedure.

We realize that your time is valuable, so once your Pre-Op appointment is scheduled, you can submit your pre-registration information to us using one of these options:

  • The electronic submission form is at the bottom of this page
  • Call 504.349.6859 and leave the required information at the voice prompts

Our Pre-Registration staff will then pre-register you in our Registration system and simply verify the information with your during your Pre-Op visit.

On the day of your Pre-Op appointment, please present to Central Registration which is located near the Gift Shop in the Atrium and make sure to bring your insurance card, picture ID and the packet of Physician’s orders that you received from the Physician’s office.

Ultrasound abdomen

Department: Ultrasound (located on the 1st floor of the Main Hospital)

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

These prep instructions are for the following types of Ultrasounds only:

  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Gallbladder
  • Retroperitoneal
  • Liver
  • Abdominal Aorta
  • Adrenal
  • Abdomen Complete

Ultrasound - prostate & transrectal

Department: Ultrasound located on the 1st floor of the Main Hospital

***Patient should report to Central Registration at least ½ hour prior to the scheduled appointment time to register/check-in.

  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Gallbladder
  • Retroperitoneal
  • Liver

Please bring any and all films, scans and reports (from an outside facility) related to this test with you to this appointment.

Ear, nose & throat surgery

Please call our scheduling line at 504.517.1650 to make your clinic appointment. We are open Monday – Friday from 8am to 5pm. Walk-ins are welcomed and we accept all major insurances.

Preparation

In preparation for your visit to West Jefferson ENT, please make a note of the following:

  • Please fill out this patient information form, so we can better serve you. At the bottom of the form you will see a “print” button. Please click it when you’re done, print your form and bring it with you to your appointment.
  • Bring all insurance information: We will need to make a copy of your insurance card(s).
  • Co-payments are due at the time of your visit: We accept cash, checks, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.
  • Bring all recent lab work and x-ray films, if applicable.
  • Bring updated demographic/contact information. Please let us know whenever you change your address, telephone number, employment, marital status or insurance, as this helps us to keep in touch with you and properly process your claims.
  • Bring a list of all medications and dosage levels you are currently taking (including over-the-counter remedies, vitamins and herbal supplements.)
  • Write down any questions or concerns you may wish to discuss with Dr. Ballay. If you'd like, bring someone with you to help listen to your physician’s comments and responses to your questions.
  • Make your next appointment every time you visit the clinic.

No show/cancel

We understand that emergencies and special needs can occur, and we will do our very best to accommodate your specific needs. Should you need to cancel an appointment, please provide as much notice as possible in order for us to enable another patient to see the doctor.

Pulmonary surgery

Scheduling your appointment

In preparation for your visit to West Jefferson Pulmonary Associates, please make a note of the following:

  • Please fill out these patient information forms, so we can better serve you. At the bottom of the forms you will see a “print” button. Please click it when you’re done, print your forms and bring them with you to your appointment.
  • Bring all insurance information: We will need to make a copy of your insurance card(s).
  • Co-payments are due at the time of your visit: We accept cash, checks, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.
  • Bring all recent lab work and x-ray films, if applicable.
  • Bring updated demographic/contact information. Please let us know whenever you change your address, telephone number, employment, marital status or insurance, as this helps us to keep in touch with you and properly process your claims.
  • Bring a list of all medications and dosage levels you are currently taking (including over-the-counter remedies, vitamins and herbal supplements.)
  • Write down any questions or concerns you may wish to discuss with your physician. If you'd like, bring someone with you to help listen to your physician’s comments and responses to your questions.
  • Make your next appointment every time you visit the clinic.
