Obstetrics & Midwifery
Pregnancy is one of the most important times in a woman’s life. Having the proper care and knowledge is essential to a successful pre-natal course and birth of your baby. We provide full pregnancy care, from conception through birth, and post partum care. Our experienced team can help you every step of the way on this incredible journey. We offer specialized care in family planning, prenatal care, childbirth, and post delivery care.
Prenatal care is critical to following your baby’s healthy development. Regular prenatal checkups are recommended and will allow for professional monitoring of you and your baby’s health. A regular obstetrical visit should include checking the baby’s heart rate, checking your blood pressure, urine and weight gain. Ultrasounds are performed to visually check the baby’s development, as needed.
Sometimes a pregnancy can become high risk. Our team is able to manage many high risk conditions, including multiple births, gestational diabetes, gestational high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, pre-mature labor, and recurrent miscarriages. For these women, we provide close follow-up, personalized care and specialized techniques to try to achieve a healthy pregnancy. Some pregnancies are so high risk that their care is best managed by a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist, which our team collaborates with, and either co-manages the pregnancy, or refers the patient to these specialists for the remainder of the pregnancy.
Our Practice also offers midwifery services for pregnancies that are expected to be normal. Our Certified Nurse Midwives are Advanced Nurse Practitioners that are specially trained in the art of midwifery. If you want a natural childbirth, or if you want an epidural for your birth, our nurse midwives are there to advocate for your choices. Our nurse midwives are also able to offer hydrotherapy, which is using water during labor and birth, to appropriate candidates. Hydrotherapy decreases discomfort during labor and water birth allows not only for less discomfort for the mother, but also is thought to be a gentler transition for the baby. Historically, nurse midwives emphasize increased labor support. If desired, we have access to doula services for our patients as well.
Trial of labor after cesarean with vaginal birth after cesarean (TOLAC/VBAC) can be offered to qualified candidates. There are several factors considered regarding a woman’s qualifications as a candidate. Additionally, the opportunity for TOLAC/VBAC is limited by availability of one of our practice partners. You may call any of our Nurse Midwives to discuss this further if you wish.
Patient education and patient collaboration is our philosophy for successful care and management. We recommend visiting The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists website for trusted supplemental information regarding your pregnancy. You can access the patient education portion of the website at ACOG.org. Throughout your pregnancy, we will provide you with as much educational communication and information as possible to keep you knowledgeable and to assist in minimizing any concerns you may have along the way.
