Mammograms on the West Bank
Women’s Imaging Services
Mammograms are a key tool in the fight against breast cancer. A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray that allows doctors to examine breast tissue. These tests are important because it’s the best means we have of detecting breast cancer in the earliest stages. The earlier cancer is detected, the better the patient’s chances are of survival.
Our mammography services
Our Women’s Imaging Center is equipped with state-of-the-art mammography technology, including 2D digital mammography, 3D-Tomosynthesis mammography, and digital mammography with Computer-Aided-Detection (CAD).
- Digital Mammography with CAD technology – The results of a mammogram are reviewed by an experienced radiologist who is trained to detect abnormalities. However, imaging results for dense breast tissue make it more difficult to notice irregularities in the image. CAD technology serves as a second pair of eyes. This sophisticated technology does its own run-through of the image and marks suspicious areas to assist the radiologist’s own examination.
- Digital 2D mammograms – These are the current standard for mammograms in the U.S. The test is performed like any other mammogram. You stand up straight while the breast is placed on a plate. A top plate then comes down and compresses the breasts to create an image of the breast tissue. Digital mammograms are stored on a computer so that results can be brightened, enlarged, or other forms of image manipulation to assist the radiologist’s diagnosis.
- 3D-Tomothesis Mammography– 3D Mammography is the latest innovation in mammogram technology. In this mammogram, several breast X-rays are taken from different angles. Sophisticated computer software then creates a 3D image of the breast tissue. A major benefit of 3D mammography is that radiologists can examine individual layers of breast tissue, making it easier to find irregularities in dense breast tissue.
