Pacemaker Implantation & Surveillance
Heart Clinic of Louisiana physicians provide services in both the diagnosis
and treatment of abnormal heart rates called cardiac arrhythmias. He services
include pacemaker implantation and the long term management and surveillance
of these devices.
What is a pacemaker?
A pacemaker is a device that sits under the skin of a person's chest that
monitors and treats abnormal heart rates. Different conditions, such as
certain heart problems, can cause a person’s heart rate to be abnormal.
Symptoms of an abnormal heart rate may include feeling dizzy or lightheaded,
trouble breathing, feeling confused, or fainting.
How does a pacemaker work?
A pacemaker monitors for these abnormal rates and sends electrical signals
to the heart when they are detected. The electrical signals cause the
heart to beat at a normal rate. Most of the time, pacemakers are used
to treat heart rates that are too slow. But pacemakers can also prevent
or control a heart rate that is too fast.
What happens after I get a pacemaker?
After you get a pacemaker you will need to follow up with your doctor on
a regular basis. Heart Clinic of Louisiana offers monitoring and surveillance
services for pacemakers which we have implanted as well as those devices
you may have received from another facility. We have designated staff
trained in checking your pacemaker to ensure that it continues to function
properly. For more information on pacemaker resources provided by Heart
