Nasal & Sinus Services
ENT treatments on the West Bank
The sinuses are hollow cavities in the skull located behind the nose, between the eyes, and on the forehead. Sinuses are usually empty save for a thin layer of mucus. Medical researchers are still not sure why we have sinuses or what they do, but we have developed treatments for when these cavities become infected. At West Jefferson Ear, Nose and Throat, we offer numerous treatments for sinus problems.
Sinusitis is a condition in which the sinus cavities become filled with mucus and become inflamed. This condition can cause facial pain, sore throat, headaches, and facial swelling, among other symptoms. Balloon sinuplasty is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that does not require any cutting into the nasal treatment. In this treatment, a catheter with an attached balloon is inserted into the sinus cavity. The balloon is expanded to open the sinus cavity. Saline spray is then sprayed into the cavity to clean out mucus and relieve symptoms.
Balloon sinuplasty can be done on an outpatient basis and is a very safe procedure. Most patients return to normal activity within two days.
Rhinoplasty & Septoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery used to treat abnormalities in the nose, including a deviated septum. You may have also heard it referred to as a nose job. Patients who might undergo rhinoplasty are those that suffered facial injuries or were born with facial deformities.
The septum is the cartilage and bone that separates the nostrils. A deviated septum refers to a septum that is out of place, which can make it difficult to breathe. The type of rhinoplasty used to repair a deviated septum is called a septoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is a fairly simple procedure that can be done on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia makes it so that patients sleep through the operation while the surgeon makes cuts in the nose to reshape it into the patient’s desired appearance.
If balloon sinuplasty proves ineffective at treating recurring sinus problems, you may require a more involved sinus surgery. It can also be used to remove abnormal growths in the sinuses such as:
- Thick mucus membranes
- Nasal polyps
- Overgrown tissue
- Thick pieces of bone
- Nasal and sinus tumors
Sinus surgery is typically carried out using a small, flexible camera called an endoscope. Endoscopic surgeries are minimally invasive, meaning only minor incisions, if any, are needed to perform the operation. This means the operation is safer, there is less scarring, and patients can recover faster. Our team will guide you through the sinus surgery procedure and make sure you are prepared for the day of surgery and the following recovery period.
