West Jefferson Hospital Foundation honors Dr. Frank Culicchia with the Frank C. Di Vincenti, MD Community Leadership Award
Dr. Frank Culicchia has been named the second recipient of the Frank C. Di Vincenti, MD Community Leadership Award. The Foundation will honor Dr. Culicchia with the award at its West Jefferson Jubilee, A Toast to the Future, on October 8, 2021 at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.
Frank Culicchia M.D. can best be described as a modern-day trailblazer. He is chairman of the department of neurosurgery at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and has practiced neurosurgery at Culicchia Neurological Clinic at West Jefferson Medical Center for over 30 years, building upon a legacy of neurocare that his father, Carl Culicchia M.D., started at West Jeff back in the 1960s.
Thanks to Dr. Culicchia, neurosurgical care at West Jefferson Medical Center and in New Orleans is on par with major medical centers around the country, despite the significant roadblocks inflicted by Hurricane Katrina. Following the storm, LSU Health New Orleans looked to Dr. Culicchia for leadership and appointed him chairman of a neurosurgery department that was struggling to survive. He helped open the door for LSU medical residents to return to New Orleans for training in the aftermath of the storm and got the department back on its feet. LSU Neurosurgery residents have been training at West Jefferson Medical Center ever since and the department has now grown to include the largest medical staff in its history, performing its highest volume of surgeries ever.
Dr. Culicchia feels strongly that no one in New Orleans should ever have to leave town for treatment and he recently took the lead in raising funds to recruit a neuro-oncologist to New Orleans. That neuro-oncologist is now seeing patients at WJMC and at LSU Health New Orleans and conducting clinical trials.
He has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a top neurosurgeon and is proud to lead the West Jeff neurosurgery team that has been ranked in years past among the top 10% in the U.S. by HealthGrades. He has also been honored by New Orleans CityBusiness as a Healthcare Hero.
“Our patients benefit from being treated by physicians that are not only dedicated private practitioners but many are also involved in cutting-edge academic research,” Dr. Culicchia says. “Our physicians are able to keep abreast of developments in the field and share that with our patients and the LSU residents working side by side with us. It is especially gratifying to train the neurosurgeons of tomorrow.”
Dr. Culicchia is a graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine and completed a general internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans where he was named outstanding intern. He completed a neurosurgery residency at Tulane University Hospital and remains a clinical associate professor of Neurological Surgery at Tulane Medical School. Dr. Culicchia completed a fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Neurovascular Surgery in Phoenix, Arizona. He is devoted to his family including his wife, Cappy and daughter, Catherine and son, Michael.
