Benefits of exercise during quarantine

During the COVID-19 pandemic when so many of us are restricted in our movements, it’s even more important for people of all ages and abilities to be as active as possible. Even a short break from sitting that consists of three to five minutes of physical movement, such as walking or stretching, will help ease muscle strain, relieve mental tension and improve blood circulation.

Regular physical activity can also help to give the day a routine and be an opportunity to stay in contact with family and friends. Performing regular physical activity during this time improves mental health and reduces the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and improves overall feelings of well being.

Need ideas to stay active?

  • Climb up stairs as much as you can.
  • Use household chores as a way to be more physically active.
  • Join an online exercise class or make up your own routine to music you enjoy that uses the major muscle groups and raises your heart rate.
  • Do some muscle strengthening activities such as lifting weights. If you don’t have weights at home, improvise using full bottles of water or simply use your own body weight and do sets of sit-ups and squats.
  • Try and reduce long periods of time spent sitting by taking three to five minute breaks every 20-30 minutes. Simply stand up and stretch or take a walk around the house.
  • Go for an outdoor walk or bike ride. Remember to practice social distancing and wash your hands before you leave and as soon as you get home.

Rules to remember:

  • Do not exercise if you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
  • If you do not regularly exercise, start slowly with very low intensity. Walking for five to ten minutes and gradually build up to 30 minutes. It is better and safer to be active for short periods more frequently than to try and be active for long periods when you are not used to it.
