When is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Appropriate?

The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) established the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee to evaluate the scientific evidence that supports the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for treatment of medical conditions from both a clinical practice standpoint and insurance coverage perspective. Currently The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other third party carriers recognizes fourteen indications approved by the UHMS.

Approved Indications:

  • Air or Gas embolism
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Smoke Inhalation
  • Clostridial Myositis and Myonecrosis (Gas Gangrene)
  • Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome and Acute Traumatic Ischemia
  • Decompression Sickness
  • Arterial Insufficiencies

    • Central Retinal Artery Occlusion
    • Selected Problem Wounds
  • Severe Anemia
  • Intracranial Abscess
  • Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
  • Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
  • Delayed Radiation Injury (Soft Tissue and Bony Necrosis)
  • Compromised Grafts and Flaps
  • Acute Thermal Burn Injury
  • Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
