Labor and Delivery Guidelines

West Jeff - Family Birth Place Labor and Delivery GuidelinesWe are very happy to share your joy in the birth of your new family member. As we share this miracle, we also ask that you help us to protect the new mother and her precious baby by following the policies/guidelines listed below.West Jeff - Family Birth Place Labor and Delivery Guidelines

  • Please do not allow family members and visitors to visit if they are ill with fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea and/or have viral or bacterial infections.
  • For optimal infant security, the Family Birth Place is a locked down unit. Please ring the doorbell and we will assist you. You must have patient’s name and room number to enter. Please be patient. One of the staff will allow access into the unit as soon as possible.
  • No children under the age of 13 are allowed in the Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms, with the exception of siblings. Siblings must be accompanied by an adult other than the mother’s significant other/baby’s father.
  • Infant carriers and strollers are not allowed in the Family Birth Place.
  • To help us maintain our fire safety policy, we must keep the hallways clear. Family members and visitors are not allowed to sit or stand outside the LDR rooms. The waiting area is located outside the double doors in the central hall on the left behind the glass. Someone will notify you once the mother is ready for visitors.
  • Photographs, video, and audio recordings are not allowed during labor, the delivery process and during the immediate stabilization of the mother and baby. Patients, visitors and family members may not photograph, record or video tape West Jefferson Medical Center employees, Physicians and care providers without their permission. The use of cameras and similar audio and/or video recording devices is discontinued upon request of the physician, anesthesiologist, or nurse participating in the care of the patient.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the LDR rooms other than what is provided for the patient.
  • Only 2 visitors at a time are allowed in the room with the patient during the labor and the recovery phases and during the delivery process as per physician preferences.
  • Please limit the time and frequency of visits! Rest is an important part of the process for a laboring woman. Our patients are challenged by the work of labor and can be easily frustrated by too many visitors. In addition, a constant rotation of people could increase the risk of infection.
  • After delivery, the baby will stay with mother for approximately 1 hour, and then will be taken to the Nursery to complete transition. “Transition” may take 2-4 hours. During this time mother will continue with her recovery process and then be transferred to Post Partum. When the baby is stable and /or transition completed, the baby will be brought back to the mother.
  • If you have any questions or need assistance, please call the nurses station at 2528.

Congratulations on the birth of your new family member!
