West Jefferson Medical Center
Emergency Services
West Jefferson Medical Center Emergency Medical Services are comprised of a number of components including the
Emergency Department, WJMC EMS and ambulance service, and Business and Industry Services.
Open 24 hours a day, every day, West Jefferson Medical Center, has never closed. Our Emergency Department offers
state-of-the-art Emergency Services serving our community around the clock. Doctors in the Emergency Room are board
certified emergency room physicians. West Jefferson’s ER is one of the busiest in our area. In addition, a fast track
for adults and adolescents as well as special pediatric ER is available. West Jefferson Medical Center follows Region
1 Trauma Protocols in collaboration with LSU Health Sciences Center.
Our community hospital is one of many firsts starting with the Emergency Department. Our hospital ER is known for being the
first in the region to care for patients 24 hours/7 days a week.
The year 1979 saw another first with the hospital’s inaugural ride of the EMS and ambulance service. WJMC operates the EMS service
for the West Bank of Jefferson Parish excluding municipalities having their own ambulance services. The impressive fleet in 2008
added in-field care including state of the art EKG transmissions to the WJMC Emergency Room.
West Jefferson Medical Center’s Emergency Department and related services play a vital role in disaster preparedness of the hospital
itself as well as community. Emergency Services conduct drills in cooperation with business and industry and agencies in the region
and participates in the parish’s Hurricane Expo and related Speakers Bureau and emergency operations programs. In addition to these,
West Jefferson Medical Center offers CPR and first responder training. CPR courses for laypersons are available via the EMS department
as well as through the Family Birth Place. Additionally, the CPR Anytime kits for families and friends are sold in WJ EMS and the
hospital gift shop.
Nurses at West Jefferson work in collaboration with members of the Medical Staff and other healthcare givers in providing
care and service to our patients and families.
