Strong Partnerships with EMS and Emergency Medicine

  • EMS pre-notifies WJMC’s Emergency Department when a patient with suspected stroke symptoms is bring brought to our hospital. Our stroke team is alerted to the patient’s expected arrival time so we can provide fast, effective care as soon as possible.
  • WJMC’s own EMS team is specially trained in the recognition and treatment of acute stroke.
  • Dedicated Interdisciplinary Stroke Team including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, radiologists, pharmacists, dieticians, stroke nurses, and therapists (physical, respiratory, occupational, and speech).
  • The stroke team utilizes Pulsara, an innovative HIPAA-compliant mobile platform that allows for real-time, mobile communication across all team members to enhance care and improve outcomes.

Rapid Diagnostic Evaluation

  • Neuroimaging: All patients with a suspected stroke are evaluated using advanced imaging such as CT scans and MRIs in order to rapidly identify extent and location of injury, blockages in the arteries of the brain, and patient eligibility for advanced treatment options.
  • Radiological Expertise: Radiologists are available 24/7 to interpret neurological images that can assist in determining patient eligibility for treatment.

Treatment with IV tPA

  • Patients who present to the hospital within 4.5 hours of the time symptoms started and who are determined to be eligible for treatment, are able to receive IV tPA – the only FDA-approved drug for the treatment of ischemic stroke.
  • Our team meets or exceeds all national time standards for tPA administration.

Endovascular Intervention Capabilities:

  • Endovascular intervention is an advanced treatment offered at WJMC that is only performed at specialized centers.
  • Neurointerventionalists are available 24/7 to perform endovascular intervention for eligible patients.
